At the last conference call, there was a reconsideration of the model and what is to be “in Scope” in our modeling effort. Although the effect upon the model diagram consisted of switching some arrowheads, the impact upon what we are doing was more significant, if perhaps not crystal clear. Although Mike captured the essence of the conversations, I don’t think the minutes of the call leave us a clear statement of where we are going with the Cloud Printing Model effort.

Indeed, Glen voiced what I believe was a common question when he asked:

“What are we doing…From the meeting I understand the "client ó cloud print service" interface is already defined (according the Pete and Ira). Since other "cloud system" interfaces (registration, etc) were declared out-of-scope (at least for now); then I believe this, as I stated in the meeting, leaves the group activity to writing the specification (or augmenting existing specifications via extensions) for the interface between the "Print Cloud Service ó Cloud Print Manager". Are there others specification that I missed?”

I think Glen’s comment accurately reflects what may be concluded from the meeting, although the minutes allude to “describing” other interactions (as distinguished from defining the Cloud Print Service/Cloud Print Manager interface.).

But I am not fully convinced this is sufficient to our broader objectives of developing a Cloud Printing Standard. The minutes add to my concern in stating:

“ Are we selling ourselves short by not tackling association/registration?

⁃ A: No, core protocol stuff is still needed, and cloud services still evolving rapidly. Standardization of core model gets us the 90% solution, with vendor-specific interfaces accounting for a small amount of code

⁃ We can always address association and registration for specific cloud technologies afterwards”

It is unclear to me whether we are decreasing scope because logically and practically, the other interfaces we identified are beyond the purview of the PWG, whether we are delaying these considerations because they relate to other “Cloud” aspects still in flux, or whether it is expedient to do so since those that would best contribute to these considerations will not be able to do so. If what are doing is one phase of a larger activity, it should be identified as such. If it is complete in itself, then that should be stated and substantiated.

We spent much time considering use cases and requirements, without really completing that activity. We jumped ahead, diagrammed the model and working on interfaces before settling on specific use objectives and requirements and agreeing on what is in scope. I suggest that we return to the Use Cases/Rationale/ Scope/Reuirements step in the specification generation process. If we want to address this in phases, then we should clearly document this and the reasons for it.

Therefore, I think that in today’s meeting we should consider the “Requirements” section, hopefully in a clean draft from Larry or, if not available, Larry’s white paper draft (ftp://ftp.pwg.org/pub/pwg/cloud/white/cloud%20print%20use%20case%20format%20update.pdf) Depending on how far we get generating a Requirements section that reflects what we want to address, we should then consider what we want to do at the August F2F. The slides for that the F2F be reconfigured to reflect that decision.

Thanks,

Bill Wagner
