Members of the IESG,

In line with a phone meeting held between the IETF IPP WG Meeting members
and Keith Moore on November 12, I have the following modified request as
to the ratification of the IPP drafts. The IPP WG would like you to ratify
the following IPP V1.0 documents as INFORMATIONAL RFCs. The WG will carry
on the work on use of TLS and the IPP URL Scheme, with the objective of
producing a new version (tentatively called NV), which can fulfill all
the IESG requirements for a Standards Track IETF protocol. The IPP V1.0
RFCs will in the meantime ensure that what we have achieved so far is
implemented in a consistent manner. Latest count indicates that some 20
organizations are currently implementing IPP and planning to release IPP
in products within the next few months. The 5 new IPP V1.0 drafts, listed
below, are all dated November 16. They differ from the earlier June 30
draft versions in the following respects:

- Minor clarifications, based on inter-operability testing made between 16
organizations' IPP implementations in September.

- Replacing earlier TLS requirements with SSL3. Currently at least 7
organizations are building SSL3 into their products, as TLS is still not
available in product quality versions.

- Some of the earlier texts in the "Model & Semantics" and "Encoding &
Transport"
drafts have been moved into a new document called the "IPP/V1.0
Implementer's
Guide", as they were found to not apply to all IPP configurations and hence
should be seen as advisory rather than part of the more formal documents.
The latter document is expected to need one more revision before it is ripe
to send to the IESG for publication as Informational RFC, but the WG does
not
see it as necessary to delay the publication of the remaining documents
until the Implementer's Guide is finished.
