This document contains a good overview of some of the firewall issues
relevant to Internet notification. Caribou claims to have solved this
problem:

"Jsockets supports full-duplex communications, allowing clients to
listen for connections from other Jsockets and non-Jsockets clients. This
also allows developers of Java applets to ignore problems with firewalls,
proxies, and reverse proxies without sacrificing the flexibility of
socket-style communications. Messages can be sent from the server to the
client "autonomously" without the use of resource wasting polling. "

but they don't completely explain how.
