Hi, Wednesday (3 November 2010)

High North has reviewed the PWG Imaging System Power Management specs
and has the following comments:

Power Model (wd-wimspower10-20100926.pdf)

(1) Editorial - replace "transitional" with "interrupt" (for states)
    - section 2.4.2, line 408 (first instance - global change)

Rationale: Original term is obscure and inaccurate
    - all power states may be "transitional" during ResetXxx operations
    - all non-Stable states are defined as software/hardware interrupts
      in sections 2.4.2 and 2.4.3

(2) Technical - delete all 10 PowerGeneral.MaxXxxRecords elements
    - section 5.1.1 through 5.1.10, lines 825-892

Rationale: Table limit elements are unlikely to be queried/used
    - typical Client will simply attempt to create a row

(3) Technical - reduce PowerMeter from RECOMMENDED to OPTIONAL
    - section 5.5, lines 1043-1050

Rationale: All elements exposing power usage should be OPTIONAL
    - legal issues have already been caused by vendor power usage claims

(4) Technical - reduce PowerSupport from RECOMMENDED to OPTIONAL
    - section 6.1, lines 1189-1193

Rationale: All elements exposing power usage should be OPTIONAL
    - legal issues have already been caused by vendor power usage claims

Rationale: PowerSupport group was originally designed to be simple
    list of supported power states
    - addition of power/job/network usage elements forced only Stable
states to be listed (breaking original design)
    - PowerGeneral.CanRequestPowerStates was added to correct the design
flaw, so original purpose of PowerSupport group is now redundant

(5) Technical - reduce PowerTransition from RECOMMENDED to OPTIONAL
    - section 6.2, lines 1270-1275

Rationale: All elements exposing power usage should be OPTIONAL
    - legal issues have already been caused by vendor power usage claims
and transition times are implicit vendor power usage claims
    - PowerTransition shouldn't be higher conformance than PowerSupport

Power MIB (wd-wimspowermib10-20100926.pdf/mib)

(1) Editorial - replace "transitional" with "interrupt" (for states)
    - section 2.4, line 228 (first instance - global change)

Rationale: See Power Model comment (1) above

(2) Technical - delete all 10 powGeneral.MaxXxxRecords objects
    - section 5 (spec), lines 261-363 and 389-413 (MIB)

Rationale: See Power Model comment (2) above

(3) Technical - reduce powMeterGroup from RECOMMENDED to OPTIONAL
    - section 5 (spec), lines 1740-1744 (MIB)

Rationale: See Power Model comment (3) above

(4) Technical - reduce powSupportGroup from RECOMMENDED to OPTIONAL
    - section 5 (spec), lines 1692-1697 (MIB)

Rationale: See Power Model comment (4) above

(5) Technical - reduce powTransitionGroup from RECOMMENDED to OPTIONAL
    - section 5 (spec), lines 1699-1704 (MIB)

Rationale: See Power Model comment (5) above

Cheers,
