Completed or Inactive PWG Groups

The P1394 printer working group is chartered to define a specification and develop a protocol layer for the IEEE-1394 High Speed Serial Bus to facilitate the delivery of print data from a source to a target device.

This effort resulted in IEEE Std. 1394.3-2003.

Alan Berkema, Chairperson.

Print Services Interface (PSI)
is the set of interfaces and methods that enable a Client such as a Printer, a Mobile Device, Web Portal, or service to set up and invoke a print job from a Print Service. The Print Service may be used to resolve and access the information to be printed.

This work project resulted in PWG 5104.2-2005.

Alan Berkema, Chairperson.

Character Repertoires,
is a set of interfaces and best practices to allow a print client to learn about characters that can be rendered in a printer. It defines a naming mechanism for a printer to announce what character reportoires it is able to render, as well as best practices designed to reduce complexity for lightweight clients.

This work project resulted in PWG 5101.2-2004.

Elliott Bradshaw, Chair.

XHTML-Print
is a simple XHTML-based data stream suitable for printing in addition to display. It is based on the W3C’s XHTML Basic with the addition of cascading style sheets (CSS). Its targeted usage will be for printing in environments where it is not feasible or desirable to load a printer-specific driver, and where some variability in the formatting of the printed output is acceptable. Information about the group can be found on the XHTML-Print Working Group Page.

This work has now been transitioned to the W3C.  See the XHTML-Print Working Group Page for links to those documents.

Don Wright, Chairperson

UPDF, Universal Printer Description File Project
is developing a means by which the characteristics and capabilities of a printers and the means to access them are described in a text file.  This file is then used by a Universal Printer Driver to create the printer datastream appropriate for this specific printer.  The Universal Printer Driver is envisioned to be a standard part of some future operating system(s).

This work project resulted in PWG 5101.4-2004.

Norbert Schade, Technical Lead.

IPP Fax
is used to provide a synchronous, reliable exchange of image documents between clients and servers using the Internet Printing Protocol.  It is envisioned as a real-time internet fax-like service for document image sending and receiving.

This work project resulted in PWG 5102.3-2004 and is currently in hibernation.

Gail (Songer) Giansiracusa, Chair
Rick Seeler, Image Technical Lead

SENSE is a mechanism for delivering asynchronous notifications of events in a computer network. Underscore is rapidly developing a prototype SENSE framework in the Unix domain to test performance, integration, and usability ideas and issues.

This work project is currently in hibernation.
