Geoff,
You got it right. An IPP printer can be queried for the
document-formats(PDLs) it supports. We have always talked about Internet
Media types (MIME) types as specified in rfc 2048 and registered by IANA.
(The list is at ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/iana/assignments/media-types/)
IPP has always talked about PDLs like PostScript(application/postscript) and
PCL (application/vnd.hp-PCL). We also have a special definition for
"auto-sensing" (application/octet-stream).
The IPP specification does not preclude a printer from accepting an
application format like MicroSoft PowerPoint (vnd.ms-powerpoint). (I didn't
see an entry for MS Word)
