Suggested topic for tomorrow's (11/28/00) telecon and the IPP WG meeting
next week (12/07/00) and the mailing list:

One of the short comings of IPP is that there is no single document that
pulls together the set of standards necessary for end to end printing on the
Internet and within the Enterprise. The IPP documents deal only with job
submission, job management, and Printer (service) management. To overcome
this problem, it is proposed to write a short IETF standards document (10-15
pages) that would cite other standards for complete end-to-end printing.
The purpose is to have a single standard that defines all the aspects of IPP
Printing from boot-up, registration, discover, Client Print Support File
down-load (print drivers, font metrics, etc.), job submission, job
management, and Print Service management for Internet and Enterprise
printing.

Suggested working title: "Complete Internet Printing"

This document will leverage existing open standards, rather than repeating
information, only adding profile information as needed in order to achieve
interoperability for conforming implementations. The following open
standards will be referenced:

Boot:
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, RFC 2131)
      DHCP Options (RFC 2132)
DHCP Options for Service Location Protocol (RFC 2610)
DHCP Option for Name Service Search (RFC 2937)
Dynamic Configuration of IPv4 Link Local Addresses
  - draft-ietf-zeroconf-ipv4-linklocal-00.txt

Registration:
LDAPv2 (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol v2, RFC 1777)
LDAPv3 (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol v3, RFC 2251)
  LDAP Schema for Printer Services
  - draft-ietf-ipp-ldap-printer-schema-03.txt

Discovery:
  SLPv2 (Service Location Protocol v2, RFC 2608)
Definition of the Printer Abstract Service Type v2.0
  - draft-ietf-svrloc-printer-scheme-06.txt
  - also in permanent IANA Service Location Template Registry

Client Print Support File Down-Load:
RFC TBA - Internet Printing Protocol (IPP): Printer Installation Extension

Job Submission and Job Management:
  RFC 2911 - IPP/1.1 Model and Semantics
  RFC 2910 - IPP/1.1 Encoding and Transport
  RFC TBA - IPP FAX
RFC 2707 Job Monitoring MIB - for job attributes

Document Formats:
  PostScript
  PCL
  XHTML-Print
  TIFF/FX

Event Notification:
RFC TBA - IPP Event Notification

Printer Management:
  RFC 2911 - IPP/1.1 Model and Semantics
  RFC 1759 - Printer MIB
RFC TBA - Printer MIB v2

A key part of the standard will be to define conformance, citing
combinations of the above.

Thanks,
Tom
