[IPP] [EXTERNAL] IPP WG Last Call: IPP Envelope Media Extensions v1.0 (ENVELOPE) [Ends May 9, 2025]

Hi Mike,
Thanks, and I'm looking forward to our discussion.
I've gathered some additional feedback that I'd like to share and get your input on during our discussion. We apologize for the late response.

Regarding "You" (Japanese) Envelopes and Naming Conventions:
	• The specification (lines 117-120) suggests that "You" (Japanese) envelopes only have long-edge flaps. However, this isn't accurate, as the "You 4 Tate" type, which is sold in the Japanese market, has a short-edge flap (Page4, https://kikakurui.com/s/S5502-2014-01.html).
	• Given that the specification indicates names can be prefixed with "You" or suffixed with "long-edge" we believe it may be more appropriate to use the "long-edge" suffix with Chou 2, Chou 3, and Chou 4 envelopes in these specific cases:
	O jpn_chou2-long-edge_148x111.1mm
	o jpn_chou3-long-edge_235x120mm
	o jpn_chou4-long-edge_205x90mm

Regarding Figure Orientation and Printer Feeding:
	• The orientation shown in some figures may be incorrect, as it depends on the assumption of either a face-down fed or face-up fed printer. (Further details are provided in the attached PPTX file.)

Regarding Page Size Dimension Constraint (x<y):
	• We're looking for clarification on why the page size dimension specification mandates the constraint x<y.
	• Do these rules also apply to vendor-defined sizes? We believe that removing the x<y constraint would be beneficial, even for these sizes.

Regarding media-col Attribute and Self-Describing Names:
	• Within the media-col attribute, the media-size and media-size-name member attributes are intended for exclusive use. Given this, why is it necessary to add new rules for the "You" prefix or "-long-edge" suffix in self-describing names? Wouldn't it be sufficient to simply use localized names for long-edge envelope sizes?
Thanks
Charles

Email was not sent from a Canon Network!

Michael/Charles,

We will talk about this on Thursday.

I did my diagrams assuming that the content is printed on the bottom side, i.e., the flap is on top in the images, so you'd lift the leading edge to the top (flip vertically) to view the printed envelope. If the printer prints on the front side of the envelope then the 2nd and 4th columns would be swapped in the figure.

The key is to make sure the orientation of the printed content is aligned with the flap location.
