[WIMS] Draft request for MPSA input on Power Management

Hi Ira,

I was thinking something a bit less terse might solicit more response. And I
would direct this to Jim Fitzpatrick so that the MPSA management could
consider how to best address the query to it members. This is the first
crack at coordinating with the MPSA for soliciting user perception for
requirements for a new capability.

The first consideration is whether we should start by asking users to look
at our documents or whether it would draw more useful information by
indicating what we are trying to address in a general sense, providing the
use cases as examples, and asking what they see as desirable use cases and
what priorities they would assign. I tend toward the latter approach. We
might wind up getting some very difficult pipe dreams, but it would be up to
us to filter out what is reasonable in a specification from an
implementation viewpoint.

I have attached (if it goes through) a possible sample.

Thanks,

Bill Wagner

Subject: [WIMS] Draft request for MPSA input on Power Management

Hi,

[draft for review on WIMS mailing list before sending to MPSA]

Greetings MPSA members,

The IEEE-ISTO Printer Working Group would like to request
suggestions for use cases for enterprise power management of
Printers, Multifunction Devices, and other Imaging Systems.

The PWG has defined an abstract Power Management Model:

  ftp://ftp.pwg.org/pub/pwg/wims/wd/wd-wimspower10-20100428.pdf

The PWG has also defined a concrete SNMP mapping in the PWG
Imaging System Power MIB:

  ftp://ftp.pwg.org/pub/pwg/wims/wd/wd-wimspowermib10-20100428.pdf

These are stable working drafts in (ready for) Prototype status.

We also request your comments on the current use cases in
section 3.2 of the above PWG Power Management Model.

Thanks,
- Ira (technical lead of PWG Power Management project)
