Don,
I understand and share your desire to enable printing of web pages
referenced by a mobile device. However, that opens a rather large can of
worms, i.e., supporting HTML 4.0 rather than XTHML 1.0, doesn't it?
I don't think that a printer conforming to the XHTML-Print standard can
print an HTML 4.0 page, mainly because of nested tables and missing end
tags.

We originally envisioned that XHTML-Print would be used not only as a way
for a
device like a cellphone or PDA to print but also as a way for these and
other
devices to be able to print a web page. Your assumption that the device has
control over how it generates data is correct but only for the data it
generates
and not for a web page surfed to on that device that now needs to be
printed.
For that reason, we need to consider the common usage of elements and
attributes
as encountered on the web. While a CSS property may be the intellectually
preferred method, if the more common method is not CSS, we should probably
mandate the more common method but recommend the CSS method.

Attached is a proposal that Jim Bigelow and I worked up to handle
attributes in XHTML-Print. This document describes new material (and a few
changes) to be added to a future version of the spec.
We would like to have your feedback ASAP. Our goal is to bring a consensus
version to Santa Fe for a vote.
