From the May 21, 2026 conference call: - Mike noted that existing CUPS and iOS/AirPrint clients do not look at media-size-name at all. - The purpose of the self-describing name syntax was to easily know the dimensions of any named media, but media-col provides the media-size collection for that. - Having the name does allow for disambiguating sizes that do not have precise integer dimensions, for example na_env10_4.125x9.5in yields 10477.5x24130 hundredths of millimeters. Client code that looks up the localized name from the dimensions needs to deal with "close" matches. - The "media-col-database" attribute is probably the largest attribute in IPP, adding media-size-name will make it even larger. - Consensus was to document the recommendation and known issues.
The "media-size-name" member of "media-col-ready" is recommended to be included by a Printer in its "media-col-ready" / "media-col-database" via a SHOULD clause in PWG 5100.7-2023. IPP Everywhere v2.0 should take a stronger stance and make this member required to help improve the user experience and move things forward.
