Tom,

The implementation for the HP LaserJet 5Si is exactly as you say. The =
printer allows eight bit characters for the read/write objects and it =
will provide 8 bit characters for some of the read-only strings (depends =
on localization).=20

I think Tom's proposal should be accepted because it allows limited =
localization instead of needlessly restricting strings to 7 bit ASCII. =
The proposal is recognized as an interim solution to the localization =
problem, but it provides a workable solution for now.
