The PWG is seeking an IEEE member to chair the potential
"revisions" of two IEEE standards (see Don Wright's note

FYI - After an informal discussion at today's PWG face-to-face
meeting, the consensus was:

(1) Reaffirm IEEE 1284 (the base parallel port interface and
definitions for IEEE 1284 Device ID still widely used in USB,
IPP, etc.); and

(2) Withdraw IEEE 1284.1 (TIP/SI).

Question: Does anyone reading this PWG mailing list know of
any *current* printer products that support IEEE 1284.1 TIP/SI?

Please do NOT respond directly to PWG Announce, but instead
send a note directly to me (IPP WG Co-Chair, responsible for
all legacy MIBs and other printing interfaces).

Dear Printing Standards folks:

Two IEEE standards related to printing:

· IEEE Std 1284, IEEE Standard Signaling Method for a Bidirectional
Parallel Peripheral Interface for Personal Computers

· IEEE Std 1284.1, IEEE Standard for Information Technology
-Transport Independent Printer/System Interface (TIP/SI) *(aka NPAP)*

will be expiring in 2021 and 2018 respectively. IEEE’s process requires
every standard to be “revised” every ten years. A “revision” may be
nothing more than changing the date on the standard to the current year but
action must be taken. As far as I know, there are no technical revisions
needed for either of these standards. Since my days at Lexmark, I have
served as the working group chair.

As you may be aware, I will be the IEEE Standards Association President in
2017 and 2018 and I don’t believe I will be able to effectively serve as
the chair for these “revision” projects.

I have been asked by the leadership of the Microprocessor Standards
Committee (MSC) leadership if there is someone who could lead this effort.
The MSC is the IEEE Sponsor Committee for both these 1284 projects. Given
the expiration dates, these “revisions” can easily be done sequentially
keeping the work load manageable. In addition, I would not expect the need
for any face-to-face meetings to complete these ballots. IEEE staff, MSC
leadership, and I will be available to help a new working group chair
complete these efforts.

If you are, or are willing to become, an IEEE member and would like the
opportunity to lead these efforts, please let me know.

Please feel free to forward this to anyone else you think may be interested.
