RFC2305 section 5 talks about a few mechanisms, but doesn't require
any specific mechanism (or even recommend one mechanism over another).

There isn't anything specific to "simple mode fax", but there isn't
anything preventing someone from adding S/MIME or PGP-MIME or channel
security (IPSec, TLS, etc.) to their messages or to their mailers. The
intent of simple mode is to "ride along the wave" of email as email
aquires these features and the market decides which mechanisms are
"best" -- for example, which is better: S/MIME or PGP-MIME?? :-)
