    While looking at what to include, preclude and make optional within PDF, I
    did a little background checking on JPEG and potential IP issues.

    It would seem that it was a design goal of JPEG to make it IP and licence
    free in it's baseline implementation. However the company Forgent Networks
    is now claiming that one of it's patents is applicable to JPEG and is
    attempting to enforce it's right to the technology.

    The JPEG working group has looked at Forgent's claims and believes that
    prior art would invalidate the patent .
