Although most of the GENA draft deals with UDP, GENA also includes HTTP over
TCP/IP.

The main PRO for this proposal besides the one listed by Carl-Uno is that it
is a general notification mechanism rather than one specifically for
printing. If IPP supported such a mechanism and other applications used it,
IPP would have other forces helping push the notification infrastructure.

Not ification Delivery Protocol over HTTP"

Paul,

I have just read the GENA draft today and have had a short chat with Yaron
Goland, who is one of the co-authors, about it today.

Here is my take on it:

PRO: Microsoft has already prototyped this and planning to put into product
(my guess: probably no earlier than 2nd half of 2000 or in 2001) so it might
well become a de facto standard.

CONS: The I-Ds are only personal contributions from the Microsoft folks. So
far they have not found a home for this stuff in any of the existing IETF
WGs, but might try to get it in under the IMPP WG umbrella.
It is based on HTTP over UDP, which means a number of limitations listed in
the draft you mentioned.
In the Oslo meeting most of hardcore IETF people I spoke to did not think
that this would fly in the IETF, but I will keep asking around this time as
well. I will also try to corner Josh Cohen who is the main author from
Microsoft.
